I’m going to end up in the game aren’t I…
July 10th, 2008This looks like one of those games from an 80’s movie or something like Are You Afraid of the Dark? where a group of kids go and buy their ticket from some creepy looking guy (and the tickets are magic, you can tell this because they glow and let off a little magic dust) and then the game ends up getting just a little too real.
This can only go one way…
The characters from the game end up alive, and become various allies, enemies and love interests for the group of kids. The kindly wizard (Chrisopher Lloyd) ends up helping them and training them as he’s the only one that knows he’s in a game, The nerd turned rouge ends up with a princess from the game who fawns over him because he’s heroic in the video game (take that jock/bullies who didn’t play any video games!) but their love cannot be as she is from the game and he is from the real world. The little sister ends up learning magic, the prissy girl learns to use a bow and the slightly-hunky-almost-jock-but-not-jock-enough-to-alienate-the-audience-anti-bully must prove himself worthy of the armor he’s given by fighting a dragon.
Soon you realize that the villans want to cross over to the real world and our heroes must follow them with the skills and heart they picked up in the game world, just when the kids think they have the villains licked the dragon emerges from the gameworld. It all ends with a climactic battle on mainstreet with the dragon that escaped from the game. (As the balding mayor cowers and regrets letting that arcade open up in the first place!)
As a team they join up to take down the dragon with the skills and heart they learned and stand triumphant in the real world where they where outsiders pushed around.
Just then you see the video game programmers standing with the investors they meant to sell the game to, the investors tear up the contract and quickly hurry out of town, the programmers scream, cry and curse the sky. But that’s what they get for mixing black magic with video game programming!
The nerd kisses his princess goodbye, the kindly wizard restores the town to it’s original state, tells the kids that it was inside them all along and they don’t need the armor, bow, magic or dagger and he takes them back (they “digitize” away)
They walk away from the arcade with a new swagger and everything goes back to normal, but then the nerd returns home and as he’s playing his video games on his Commodore 64, he finds a box under the desk, it has his dagger, outfit and a rose from the princess. He looks up at the screen and the kindly wizard is there, gives a wink, puts his finger to his lips in a “shush” gesture and he looks at us the audience and “digitizes” out.
The screen goes dark and we listen to Kris Kross as the credits roll.
I really can’t see it going any other way. There’s two of these within two hours of my place, anybody up for a little adventure?
